- Lot Description
- Bright medium gold surfaces with a tinge of pale underlying honey and a hint of subtle pinkish-rose iridescence. Traces of mint reflectivity remain in the fields and are best appreciated with the aid of direct lighting. Softly struck overall, typical of the issue, with the D mintmark soft due to having been lightly entered into the reverse die of the Winter 27-U and 28-U varieties. This critical feature, however, is fully outlined and readily appreciable. Elusive in all grades due to extensive circulation, the 1850-D half eagle is typically represented by well worn, and often impaired survivors. In certified EF-40 this is one of the finer circulated examples currently obtainable from a mintage of 43,984 pieces.
