Whisenhunt Collection. Mintage: 19,786. Attrition from a low original mintage explains the paucity of nicer examples of 1856-D, aggravated by the fact that many surviving examples were struck on inferior planchets. Not so here, as this example seems to have been struck upon a decent flan, and now exhibits caramel texture after some fifteen points of wear. While flatly struck as usual for Dahlonega, there can be no mistake about the luster, which shows in peripheral areas and become particularly noticeable on the reverse.
