Lot Description

1848 Braided Hair Cent. N-26. Rarity-5. Grellman State-c. AU-50BN (NGC). Even deep chestnut brown with a bit of deeper patina in the recesses, around the devices and through the legends. A few scattered marks, the most noteworthy being an ancient curving intermittent scratch on the portrait that has long since toned over and is not really seen without magnification. A rare variety that really doesn't come in nice grade. Even our Twin Leaf Part I sale included only an EAC 45 coin, and that was high Condition Census for the variety. None are known in Mint State. This piece is the rare late state, identified by a small die line crossing the wreath stem tip. EAC:VF35
