Lot Description
1803/2 Capped Bust Right Half Eagle. BD-1. Rarity-4. VF-35 (PCGS). A handsome and fully original example with subtle rose peripheral highlights to otherwise honey-gold surfaces. All major design elements are boldly defined and fully appreciable, and the surfaces are generally smooth in hand apart from a few swirls of ancient surface build up scattered about on the reverse. Although BD-1 is the most readily obtainable of the four known die marriages of the 1803/2 half eagle, with 150 to 200 coins believed extant (per John W. Dannreuther, 2006) it is a scarce variety when viewed in the wider context of U.S. numismatics. BD Die State c/e, terminal for the reverse with a prominent cud break over the letters UN in UNITED. PCGS# 8084. NGC ID: 25NY. Provenance: From the Alexander Collection. Earlier ex B. Max Mehl's sale of the William Cutler Atwater Collection, June 1946, lot 1617; Hollinbeck Stamp & Coin Co., December 1947. Stack's company envelope with provenance notation included.
