1853-D Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter 29-V. Large D. AU-53 (NGC). With vivid pinkish-rose highlights to otherwise honey-gold surfaces. Boldly defined overall with a pleasingly smooth appearance in hand for a pre-Civil War era Southern gold coin that saw light circulation. This issue is a favorite among both mintmarked gold type collectors and Southern gold specialists, most of whom settle for a VF or EF coin. Just 89,678 pieces were struck for the 1853-D half eagle, and this conditionally scarce AU is certainly among the more desirable survivors. Provenance: From the Trebuchet Collection. PCGS# 8255.
