- 1857 Liberty Head Half Eagle. MS-62 (PCGS).
Intense satin luster mingles with vivid pinkish-orange patina on both sides of this lovely example. Quite smooth overall for the assigned grade, and not all that far from a Choice Uncirculated rating. While not a great rarity in an absolute sense -- the mintage is 98,188 pieces -- the 1857 is one in a long line of No Motto Liberty Head half eagles from the Philadelphia Mint that are underrated rarities in Mint State. A find for advanced gold enthusiasts.
Provenance: From the Steve Studer Collection.
PCGS Population: 16; 17 finer (MS-64+ finest).
