1859-FD Octagonal 25 Cents. BG-701. Rarity-6-. Liberty Head. MS-65 PL (PCGS). Typical weak strike on the obverse, although much sharper on the reverse, both sides exhibit vivid medium gold patina to boldly prooflike surfaces. Maker's mark FD on Liberty's coronet, the letter R in DOLLAR is widely repunched. BG-701 is scarce in an absolute sense and a formidable rarity with the quality and eye appeal offered here. Provenance: Ex DeWitt Smith Collection, December 1908; our (Bowers and Merena's) sale of the Virgil M. Brand Collection, Part II, June 1984, lot 1585. Bowers and Merena lot tag included.
