Lot Description
1798 Draped Bust Silver Dollar. Heraldic Eagle. BB-119, B-29. Rarity-4. Pointed 9, Close Date. AU-55 (PCGS). This wonderfully original example exhibits vivid undertones of blue, gold and pink to dominant sandy-gray patina. The reverse is the lighter of the two sides, although both are equally lustrous with much of the original finish evident as the coin dips into a light. Smooth in hand and solidly graded at the Choice AU level. This is a scarce variety, per Q. David Bowers (2013), who asserts that only 200 to 350 coins are extant in all grades. The author further states that most survivors grade no finer than VF, his list of "Notable Specimens" including only a single "Uncirculated" coin (Hollinbeck-Kagin, January 1970, lot 783) that has not been designated as such in the modern market. In PCGS AU-55 the present example is solidly in the Condition Census for the BB-119 dies and would do equally well in an advanced type or variety set. BB Die State II. Provenance: From the Greenway Collection. Stack's paper envelope with attribution notation included. PCGS# 6873. NGC ID: 24X6. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
