Lot Description

134.1 grains. A premium Choice EF example of this distinct Crosby number for the 1783 Nova Constellatio issue, the only one with a large U.S on the reverse. The strike is well centered overall, the reverse rotated a few degrees clockwise from coin alignment and missing denticulation from 12 to 7 o'clock; the obverse reveals denticulation only from 3 o'clock to 6:30. This variety can come quite soft, especially in the centers, but here we note otherwise bold definition that softens appreciably only around the obverse periphery and at lower reverse. All major design elements are appreciable, and many are sharp, including the all-seeing eye and U.S. in the centers. The choice planchet is smooth and frosty with autumn-orange brown patina and hints of underlying powder blue. This has a much better strike and overall appearance than many circulated examples of the Crosby 1-A Large U.S variety we have handled in recent years, and it is worthy of strong bids.
