Lot Description
The glistening vanilla centers of this enchanting Superb Gem are cradled by bold peripheral halos of reddish-bronze and cobalt blue. Dense, satiny luster blankets the design elements, subtly contrasting with the lightly reflective fields. The surfaces are effectively pristine and without a single consequential blemish. In 1857, the Philadelphia Mint struck 9,644,000 quarters for circulation, the third largest mintage of the entire Liberty Seated design type. Because of its relative availability in grades up to and including Gem Mint State, the 1857 is often chosen by type collectors who desire excellence. Above MS-66, however, the situation changes and the population figures drop sharply (and likely include a few resubmissions). The advanced numismatist would be well advised to pay close attention as this stunning example that is so very close to the pinnacle of quality for this issue crosses the auction block.
