Lot Description
Elegantly toned surfaces feature a blend of pewter, blue-gray and reddish-apricot colors. Light hairlining explains the grade from PCGS, but these blemishes are well concealed by the toning, and undeniable originality helped to confirm CAC approval at the Proof-63 level. The 1857 was produced on the cusp of widespread popularity of coin collecting in the United States, which began in a large way the following year, 1858 (at which time an estimated 210 silver Proof sets were made). For the Proof 1857, Q. David Bowers (2016) estimates the mintage at just 40 to 60 pieces.
