- 1857 Flying Eagle Cent. Snow-PR1. Proof-63 (NGC).
Deep golden surfaces exhibit bold rose, olive, and blue iridescence in the reflective fields and on the frosty motifs. Sharply struck as should be expected. From an unknown but undoubtedly tiny mintage; the Red Book gives a figure of 100, the Buyer's and Enthusiast's Guide by Bowers suggests 50 to 100 pieces, and Whitman's specialized Guide Book on the series notes "Traditionally estimated at 485; possibly as low as 50." Estimates are simply that, and they are seemingly all over the board for this date, while the only certainty at hand is the absolute rarity of the date in Proof. Estimates aside, the present coin is laden with eye appeal for the assigned grade, and those in the know as to the true rarity of the issue will bid accordingly.
