- Description du lot
- Obv: The same design that the Mint used to strike regular issue 1849 Liberty Seated half dimes. Rev: Simplicity itself - a digit 3 for the denomination set in an open field, with denticulation around the border. Steel to slate gray toning overall with blended gold and lilac accents at the center and wisps of navy blue at the obverse rim. This Judd number represents a quick and efficient way for the Mint to create a pattern in response to a request by the Chairman of the Committee of Ways and Means, Sam Vinton, in January 1849, for the creation of a three-cent piece. According to Michael Bourne in his 2024 reference Comprehensive Catalogue of 3-Cent Patterns, the historical composition of this Judd number is 50% silver, 50% copper, but the average composition among specimens that have actually been tested is 66% silver, 34% copper. The same source accounts for only eight or nine survivors.
