Losbeschreibung
1873 Two-Cent Piece. Open 3. Proof-65+ BN (NGC). An exquisite Gem that really needs to be seen to be fully appreciated. Both sides are dressed in vivid lilac, cobalt blue and salmon pink iridescence that enlivens a base of rich antique copper patina. Fully struck from the rims to the centers with a virtually pristine satin texture. This is the more elusive of the two date logotypes of the final year Proof-only 1873 two-cent piece, survivors approximately two and a half times rarer than their Close 3 counterparts. Traditional numismatic wisdom has it that the Close 3 examples are originals and the Open 3 specimens restrikes, although there is no documentary evidence to support this theory. The Open 3 is a significant condition rarity above the Proof-65 level of preservation, the premium Gem offered here of further desirability given the vividness of color that greets the viewer from both sides. A highlight of the two-cent piece offerings in this sale, and sure to see spirited bidding among astute collectors. Provenance: From the Marc Kravit Collection. NGC Census: 1; 6 finer in this category (all Proof-66 BN). PCGS# 3654. NGC ID: 2754. Click here for certification details from NGC.
