Lot Description
Exceptional quality for this die pairing and likely among the finest known. A prize for the date or type collector as early Capped Bust dimes preserved at the Gem Mint State level are very scarce. The surfaces are modestly toned a soft steel-lilac color. Rather well struck for this date, although a hint of softness is noted on Liberty's uppermost curls and the eagle's neck and talons, features rarely seen sharp in examples of this issue. Light die clash (as made) is evident in the fields, and the surfaces are virtually pristine with virtually no significant marks from handling. Although rated as an R-1 variety, this die pairing appears to be more challenging to locate in Mint State than this would indicate, with most numismatists being forced to find modest grade examples for their collections. This condition rarity in NGC MS-65 will please the connoisseur of the series.
