Famous Humbert Eagle Reverse Octagonal Liberty Head Dollar BG-501, Low Rarity-5 Undated (1853-1854) Octagonal $1. BG-501. Rarity-5-. Liberty Head, "Humbert" Eagle Reverse. EF-45 (PCGS). OGH. Crudely reeded edge. Lustrous deep yellow gold with even wear on the high points and no appreciable marks. The famous "Humbert" eagle reverse style, modeled after the Humbert $50 "slugs" of the Gold Rush era. Broadly repunched O in CALIFORNIA. Perhaps the most famous of all the Frontier, Deviercy & Co. issues. Die State I: "Faint die crack reverse rim at 3:00 to upper right tip of G." The present piece must represent the earliest die state, as there is no visible crack as noted in the Breen-Gillio reference. PCGS# 10478. Provenance: From the Ronald Lyle Collection.
