A brilliant white coin with exceptional visual appeal. Softly frosted on the motifs, the fields deliver uncommon reflectivity in an example of this issue. Expertly preserved, as well, it is little wonder that this is the single finest circulation strike 1875 half dollar known to NGC in their PL category. A popular choice as a type coin, the 1875 sports an uncommonly sizeable mintage of 6,026,800 circulation strikes achieved due to the Specie Payment Resumption Act of January 14, 1875, which ushered in a brief period of heightened half dollar production that lasted into early 1878. With the government seeking to remove the paper currency that had become prevalent in circulation during and after the Civil War and replace it with "hard money," the three operating mints at the time (Philadelphia, Carson City and San Francisco) increased production of the dime, quarter and half dollar during these years.
