Lot Description
This variety, cataloged as BD-5, was discovered by Harry Bass, on one of the two examples he owned, purchased in 1966. He noted a tiny star hidden in cloud below the F in OF. Considered to be Rarity-4+, the Bass-Dannreuther book estimates 90-110 known in all grades. Obviously, this variety is VERY RARE in any Mint State grade. The present coin is truly Mint State, with no signs of friction or wear of any kind. Well struck with crisply defined design elements, this deep tangerine-gold toned BU example has a fantastic look. Under the intense scrutiny of a strong glass, we can locate a few stray tiny ticks and a light line or two, but nothing that is singularly worthy of mention. The eye appeal is excellent for the assigned grade. PCGS 3, NGC 5. The only PCGS MS61 example to sell in auction sold in February 2023 for $39,120. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $65,000. Nothing graded below MS64 has sold since 2017. This is a coin worthy of a very strong bid and placement in an advanced cabinet of early gold or box of 20. Good luck. Cert. Number 46987258 PCGS # 88565
