- 1847 Braided Hair Cent. N-38, 16. Rarity-1. Grellman State-c. MS-64BN (PCGS).
Rich mahogany brown surfaces with traces of faded red remaining near the dentils on both sides. Lustrous, well struck and quite pleasing. A few tiny spots are noted under magnification, but are barely seen otherwise. Grellman's State c, with obverse clashmarks easily seen off Liberty's lower neck and chin. This was thought to be a different variety by Howard Newcomb, called N-16 in his landmark work, though this has since been delisted as it is now recognized as a die state of N-38. A lovely piece with a fine provenance.
