- Poorly struck coins with noticeably abraded surfaces are the norm among survivors from the mintage of 9,714,000 circulation strike 1962 half dollars. So much so that Rick Tomaska reports in the 2023 edition of his Guide Book of Franklin & Kennedy Half Dollars that this is, "A rare coin in MS-66, and extremely rare in MS-66 FBL. I may handle a single non-FBL MS-66 1962-P [sic] in a year." Regarding examples in MS-67 and MS-67 FBL, the author states succinctly: "Unknown." The offered coin is tied with only three others as the highest graded examples approved by CAC in the FBL category. It is one of the finest realistically obtainable for the issue and sports bold, vivid toning on virtually pristine surfaces. A richly original strike and condition rarity that will elicit strong bids from astute Franklin half dollar collectors.
