Lot Description

Struck from an early state of the obverse without the extensive die rust that eventually develops through the lower left of the rays, although the familiar reverse die break within the wreath above the digits 17 in the date is plainly evident. Both sides are struck off center, the obverse to upper right with the border into the tops of the letters ATIO, reverse to upper left with the tops of the letters TAS ET flush with the border. Hard and frosty, the surfaces retain some old dirt within the protected areas around and among the design elements, but are free of detracting marks and have a pleasantly smooth appearance in hand. Boldly to sharply defined throughout.
