Lot Description
According to Doug Winter in the 2023 edition to his reference Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint: 1838-1861, "Varieties 5-B and 48-B are rare and important varieties which sell for a significant premium over Variety 5-D." The former are the Tall D die pairings of the 1841-D, struck from a holdover reverse from 1840, and produced to the extent of just 4,105 pieces, all of which were delivered in one of two small batches in early 1841. The present offering for a bright, frosty, vivid golden-yellow example will surely catch the eye of advanced Southern gold enthusiasts. There is a light scratch in the left obverse field, also a few wispy hairlines on both sides, but these are nicely offset by a razor sharp strike that has imparted crisp detail throughout the design.
