Lot Description
1838-D Classic Half Eagle. Winter 1-A, the only known dies. EF-40 (PCGS). First of the Dahlonega Mint half eagle issues, and the only one of the short lived Classic design type, the popularity of the 1838-D knows no bounds in the numismatic market. Overall lightly worn, yet sill sharply defined in most areas, only isolated highpoints display appreciable softness of detail. Glints of copper-rose iridescence at the borders frame otherwise khaki-gold surfaces. While there are no individually distracting abrasions, wispy hairlines and a somewhat glossy texture point to an old, light cleaning.
