Lot Description
The 1915 issue is a popular choice among collectors seeking a single coin to represent the challenging Indian eagle. In his Guide Book of Gold Eagle Coins authored for Whitman in 2017, our own Q. David Bowers provides an estimated Mint State population of 8,000+ coins from a mintage of 351,000 pieces and observes, "The supply of Mint State pieces was greatly augmented by imports from the 1970s onward." Since there were numerous auction appearances even by the 1960s, the 1915 clearly benefited from early release into numismatic hands and was probably one of the more readily obtainable Indian eagles in Mint State in Mr. Stack's time. He did well with this purchase - as with so many of his acquisitions - and secured a beautiful and premium Choice Uncirculated coin to represent the issue. Satiny luster blends with vivid honey-orange color on undeniably original surfaces. A crisp strike and freedom from significant marks further confirm this as one of the nicest 1915 $10s available at the certified MS-64 level.
