Lot Description
THE SAN DIEGO COLLECTION Tied for FINEST KNOWN for the die variety, and the Small Date, Curl Base 2 Red Book variety is RARE in any Mint State grade. Indeed, 1820 is the second toughest date in the lettered edge half dollar series to find in Mint State grades. The mintage of just over 3/4 of a million is nearly equal to the 1807 that was saved in small quantities because of the first year of issue. The 1820 was not saved at the time of issue. The 1820 is a unique date, where there are seven die marriages, contributing to five separate listings in the Red Book. The present example is gorgeously toned. PQ and semi-reflective brilliance glows from below a mix of golden-russet and olive-tan in the center, surrounding the periphery is a band of rich azure toning. Every detail boasts razor sharp definition, imparted by a pinpoint exacting blow from the screw press. The surfaces are high end for the grade, with little evidence of contact or any distractions of any kind. Ex. Heritage, March 2015, lot 4956; Heritage, March 2016, lot 4892. PCGS 8, NGC 9, CAC 2. This coin sold in March 2016 for $11,456, and it was not CAC approved then. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $12,500 and the CAC CPG value is listed at $13,800. PCGS has graded just three finer none of which ever sold in auction. This is an important opportunity for the advanced Bust Half Nut to acquire a CAC-approved CHOICE MINT STATE example. Do not let it get away! Cert. Number 46263202 PCGS # 39563
