Boldly defined and lustrous for this challenging Grant With Star issue. Lightly toned in pearl gray with an impressively smooth appearance overall. Issued to mark the centenary of Ulysses S. Grant's birth, commemoratives of this design type were produced in both half dollar and gold dollar denominations. Some examples of both denominations exhibit a small star in the right obverse field. This feature has no known significance and seems to have been added to create different types that would require contemporary collectors to acquire two examples of each denomination. With a net mintage of just 4,250 coins distributed, the Grant With Star half dollar is a key date issue in the classic commemorative series.
