Lot Description
BB Die State I. An elegant piece, both sides are lightly and evenly toned in golden-gray iridescence. Both sides also sport full, even border denticulation from a nicely centered strike. The detail is a bit soft in isolated areas, most notably on the hair behind Liberty's brow, but there is little actual wear, and overall definition is remarkably sharp for an early U.S. Mint silver dollar. Lustrous and frosty with just wispy marks that do not inhibit an impressively smooth appearance during viewing.
This very scarce die variety of the 1800-dated silver dollar issue has an estimated population of no more than 75 coins in all grades. Q. David Bowers in his Encyclopedia of United States Silver Dollars, 1794-1804 was unaware of any Mint State examples and estimated the AU population at fewer than 10 pieces; his 2013 roster of "Notable Specimens" tops off at AU-58 and includes examples in grades as low as EF-45. The Winter 2024 revision to Stephen J. Herrman's Auction Prices Realized for Early Silver Dollars: 1794-1803 also confirms that the finest known 1800 BB-189 dollars have been certified AU-58. This apparent newcomer to the census at the AU-58 level is tied for CC#1, and its offering in this sale represents a fantastic opportunity for a specialist.
