Lot Description

Tompkins Die Stage 2/1, Rea et al. Die State b. Warm charcoal-mauve patina blankets both sides of this moderately worn, yet well-balanced example. The lower left reverse periphery is soft, the letters UNI in UNITED somewhat indistinct, but otherwise we note bold outline definition for all design elements. There are a few light digs in the left and right obverse field areas, also on the reverse at the eagle's tail - the only mentionable blemishes. Browning-1 is the second scarcest die pairing of this issue, following B-5, with which it shares its obverse die. On B-1, the letter C in the denomination does not touch the eagle's tail.
