- 1853 Braided Hair Cent. N-10. Rarity-1. MS-65 RD (PCGS). CAC.
This thoroughly PQ example retains nearly full mint rose color that is just barely starting to fade to iridescent steel-brown on isolated high points. Well struck apart from a touch of peripheral softness on both sides, and expertly preserved with an impressively smooth appearance in hand. There is a shallow rough area on Liberty's neck caused by foreign matter clogging the die, faint carbon at stars 6 and 12 on the obverse mentioned solely for provenance concerns. Grellman Die State b, from which a fairly sizeable hoard of Mint State examples has survived. This is among the finest, as confirmed by Bob Grellman's September 2009 cataloging for the Naftzger Collection, Part III sale: "Called MS68 and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census...Our grade is MS66, CC#1 in the Grellman census."
Provenance: From Ira & Larry Goldberg's sale of the Ted Naftzger Collection, Part III, September 2009 Pre-Long Beach Auction, lot 1151. Lot tag and old collector envelope with Andrews-10 attribution included.
