This popular naked-eye variety of the 1802 Draped Bust cent shares its blundered denomination reverse with the 1801 S-223 attribution. In fact, die state progression confirms that coinage of both varieties was intermingled. The offered 1802 S-228 in Breen Die State I was struck in between Die States III and IV of the 1801 S-223 variety.
