December 2025 Showcase Auction - The James A. Stack, Sr. Collection Part I

Lot Description: An impressive Superb Gem Proof of the date, a coin with frosted motifs and deeply mirrored fields. Central obverse brilliance near the shield gives way rapidly to impressive, deep iridescent violet, rose, and electric blue, while the reverse is a study in similar but deeper hues. Overall the outstanding quality of the coin combined with the spectacular old time toning creates an aesthetically magnificent effect reminiscent of the Proofs found in collections such as that of Walter Childs, where such coins were purchased directly from the U.S. Mint and carefully stored and preserved for generations.<p>Single finest PCGS-certified from a reported Proof mintage of 470 pieces, although surprisingly the 2018 Osburn-Cushing reference on Liberty Seated dollars reports that four die pairings were used for this small production run. The authors identify all of these as having been used for original strikings of the date. The present example is attributed as OC-P1, a die marriage with a Rarity-4 rating. This issue as a whole is rare in the finest grades, as here, and since Gem Proofs of the date are always in demand (especially given the paucity of Mint State silver dollars of this date), those who enjoy richly toned, premium quality Liberty Seated dollars will no doubt beat a path to the present lot when it appears at auction.
