Description du lot
1842-O Liberty Quarter Eagle. Winter Variety One, the only known dies. AU-53 (PCGS). 1868-S Liberty Quarter Eagle. AU-58 (NGC). Even yellow-gold color flows over both sides of this sharply struck and minimally worn O-mint quarter eagle. There are no individually distracting abrasions, another uncommon attribute in a survivor of this issue, and a minor disturbance near the lower left obverse border appears to be a shallow planchet flaw (as struck). The 1842-O has an original mintage of just 19,800 pieces, and the absence of an 1841-O quarter eagle delivery suggests that this issue suffered a high rate of attrition through commercial use. Indeed, survivors are very scarce and number only 100-125 coins (per Doug Winter, 2006), such an estimate ranking the '42-O third in overall rarity (tied with the 1840-O) among New Orleans Mint quarter eagles.
