Lot Description
Undated (Circa 1694) London Elephant Token. Hodder 2-B, W-12040. Thick Planchet. MS-66 RB (PCGS). CAC. An exemplary example of this enigmatic issue, a coin that possesses bold design elements and equally bold dentils around the peripheries, with the dentils boldly doubled at the bottom of the obverse. The somewhat frosty surfaces are deep golden-tan with a hint here and there of soft underlying mint orange iridescence. Other than some faint ticks that were in the planchet when struck and a soft toning spot above the pachyderm's spine, no marks of measure are seen. One of just two examples of the design type certified as MS-66 by PCGS; the other is certified as MS-66 BN. As nice as you are apt to see for the design type, at least in a PCGS holder. Ideally suited to a high-grade "colonial" coin cabinet or early Red Book type set.
