Lot Description
131.8 grains. A classic rarity in the Nova Constellatio series, a circulating counterfeit that closely imitates a 1783-dated Small US type. Very few of these are known, Michael Hodder suggested that as many as 20 could exist, but even that number strikes us as a bit high. What's more, most 1786 Nova Constellatio coppers are miserable looking, with environmental damage, surface damage, and other significant impairments the norm. Despite the basal grade, this one is exceptionally choice with regard to planchet and surface quality. Both sides are generally smooth during in-hand viewing and show warm, even, autumn-brown patina that speaks volumes about the coin's originality. A couple of dents and a small carbon spot at right obverse are the only blemishes of note. Wear is commensurate with the assigned grade, especially heavy through the centers, which show little to no detail. For the obverse, however, one will discern portions of the word CONSTELLATIO and NOVA, a few of the stars, and ghostly outlines of several rays. The reverse is rotated a little more than 90 degrees counterclockwise from coin alignment, lower left center smooth, but the digits 786 in the date are plainly evident, portions of the legend and wreath are discernible, and the persistent viewer can just barely make out a trace of the US at center. A row of die clashed denticles arcs through the right central reverse. With few examples of this issue having better surfaces, this one, also with a mostly clear date, must certainly be considered better than average. Market appearances for 1786 Nova Constellatio coppers are usually few and far between, so bidders are urged to take full advantage of this fleeting opportunity.
