- Lot Description
- This handsome specimen is boldly toned over sharply struck, reflective surfaces. The 1876 has the highest Proof mintage in the twenty-cent series of 1875 to 1878; the striking of 1,500 pieces likely represented the Mint's anticipation of increased sales to contemporary American's seeking numismatic keepsakes from the nation's centennial. With a fair number of survivors cleaned or otherwise impaired, it appears that many Proofs of this date did find their way into the hands of non-numismatists. Carefully and originally preserved near-Gems can be challenging to locate in today's market, confirming the important opportunity that this lot represents for the quality-conscious numismatist.
