Lot Description

SHI DS3. A generally medium brown example with glints of overlying olive that are more prevalent on the obverse. The surfaces are impressively smooth during in-hand viewing, and even under magnification reveal only trivial blemishes, most of which are natural to the planchet, although accuracy does compel us to mention a few wispy scratches over and around the horse. The latter are insignificant for the assigned grade, the wear also commensurate with such and leaving all major design elements boldly outlined and fully appreciable. The updated 2024 SHI Census for this scarce Maris number lists four EFs and four VFs. This one is smoother and lacks the granularity of Syd Martin's PCGS VG-8 that brought $2,520 in our Summer 2022 Global Showcase Auction, lot 8020.
