Description du lot
Obv: The regular issue design of 1859 with pointed bust. Rev: The Oak Wreath with Shield design adopted for regular issue Indian cent production in 1860. Transitional issue. Dominant medium tan patina with a general brilliant appearance at first glance. A superior quality near-Gem with a full strike, satiny luster and freedom from most distracting blemishes.
Nearly all of this variety were struck in circulation format, brilliant and lustrous, rather than Proof. It has been conjectured that these may have been regular issues produced in very small quantities toward the end of the year. Some expansion of this can be found in Dave Bowers' A Buyers' and Enthusiasts' Guide to Flying Eagle and Indian Head Cents. Moreover, the 18th edition of the Standard Catalogue of United States Coins edited by John J. Ford, Jr.. listed this among regular issues. Here, indeed, is a particularly interesting transitional pattern that merits your careful consideration. We see a lot of hidden value.
