Lot Description
Undated (ca. 1828) American Plantations Token, or 1/24 Part Real. Restrike. Newman 5-D, W-1160. Rarity-4+. MS-61 (PCGS). A pleasing example of the type, both sides exhibit sharp striking detail to the central design elements, most of those around the peripheries discernible to bold. Deep pewter gray patina throughout, the surfaces typically rough for the type with an area of prominent pitting at the lower obverse border. Although originals of the Newman 5-D die marriage may exist, only restrike have been positively confirmed as of this writing. The latter were produced circa 1828 by Matthew Young, a London coin dealer who retained two die pairs of this type after selling the balance to the British Museum. Young's restrikes (Newman 4-E and 5-D) were disseminated by W.S. Lincoln & Son, another London numismatic firm. With original American Plantations tokens usually heavily corroded or otherwise significantly impaired, collectors seeking a high quality example for a colonial coin type set often select one of Young's restrikes. The present example is certainly highly desirable. PCGS# 52. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
