Lot Description
An exquisite Superb Gem in all regards, one's eye is immediately drawn to both the smoothness of the surfaces and the intensity of the satin to softly frosted luster that characterize both sides. A razor sharp strike is equally notable, as is wonderfully original color in vivid reddish-rose and orange-gold shades. For both the type and the issue, it is difficult to imagine a more appealing Liberty Head eagle at the MS-67 grade level.<p>The Philadelphia Mint produced 200,992 circulation strike eagles in 1905. While this total is small when compared to the mintage figures for the truly common 1901, 1901-S and 1907 Liberty Head eagles (1,718,740 coins, 2,812,750 coins and 1,203,899 coins struck, respectively), the 1905 is still one of the more readily obtainable issues of its type in today's market. Most survivors grade no finer than MS-63, however, and this issue is scarce even in MS-64. Gems in MS-65 are elusive, and anything finer is so rare that most collectors will never even see such a coin, let alone have the opportunity to add one to their collection. This, then, is a significant opportunity for the advanced numismatist that is worthy of the strongest bids.
