Tompkins Die Stage 4/4, Rea et al. Die State b. Tompkins Plate Coin. Gently mottled steel-olive, pinkish-silver and reddish-russet patina drifts over softly frosted surfaces. The typical bluntness of strike for the variety is evident at lower left obverse, but otherwise we note sharp AU detail throughout the design. This coin represents a remarriage of these dies, after the obverse was employed in the 1833 B-2 pairing. It is identifiable by heavy die rust pitting on the obverse and lapping of the reverse die (to reduce rust) that has broken the arrow shafts at the eagle's claws.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: Just when this LDS was struck is a somewhat mystery due to the heavy die rust found on both sides. However, according to an article by Louis Scuderi (JRCS Journal July 2001 Vol.13/3), it may have been in late 1833 after all, the result of improper storage of the dies in the wet and humid weather experienced by Philadelphia that year. Aren't coins fascinating?
