Lot Description

Highly lustrous in a satin to softly frosted texture, this delightful premium Gem also sports wonderfully original surfaces. The obverse is generally light pinkish-silver with enhancing blushes of cobalt blue at the periphery. The reverse, on the other hand, is vividly toned throughout in a blend of cobalt blue, mauve, and orange-gold colors. Sharply struck and crisply defined. The final low mintage circulation strike quarter of the 1879 to 1890 era, the 1890 was produced to the extent of just 80,000 pieces with premium Mint State survivors such as this particularly popular with advanced collectors. In 1891, the final year of the Liberty Seated design type, the Philadelphia Mint would produce a staggering total of 3.9 million circulation strikes, along with 2.2 million coins for the 1891-S and a scant 68,000 pieces for the 1891-O. Clearly the Treasury Department's supply of earlier dated quarters that had been hoarded and exported during the Civil War and Reconstruction eras was exhausted by 1891, explaining the strong demand for new coinage to meet the needs of commerce.
