Plunging into the series without knowing the semi-key dates (aside from the obvious keys) can be a minefield for the inexperienced collector. 1919-S proves to be a much tougher date near the mint-state level, especially with no problems, and even a mildly lustrous example like this one can be evasive. Modest flatness on the head likely indicates a non-full-head strike (when new), combined with delicate wear to account for an overall bold appearance.
