Lot Description

Minimally toned in pale silver-lilac iridescence, viewing with the aid of direct lighting reveals a virtually brilliant coin. The finish is appreciably reflective, the strike sharp to full for virtually all design elements. From a mintage of 1,987 pieces, all of which are Proofs since the Mint ceased producing circulation strike trade dollars in 1878 on the orders of Treasury Secretary John Sherman. The series in its entirety would come to an end in 1885, capped off by the famous 1884 and 1885 rarities.
