Description du lot
THE SOMMELIER COLLECTION Ex Hesselgesser Collection, as noted on the insert. The present high end AU55 is tied for second highest graded for this Rarity-5 variety at PCGS, and clearly in the Condition Census for the variety. This Hesselgesser pedigreed coin is listed in Q. David Bowers' 2013 list of "Notable Specimens." This is a very attractive, originally toned specimen. Impressive golden color melds with varied pewter, russet, subtle blue, delicate olive and tan patina pulls away from the legends and is generally evenly dusted over the abundant underlying mint brilliance. Exceptionally well struck, save for some minor softness at the eagle's breast feathers and on the shield; otherwise the strike is complete, bold, and crisp, with razor sharp precision. The short stay in commerce during the first Adams Administration failed to impart any unsightly marks, and its caretakers over these last 222 years kept it safe and secure, not venturing to "improve" it by cleaning or damaging it in any other manner. Struck from a late reverse die state with a strong die break passing between ED of UNITED and into the left corner of the shield, and another crack from the eagle's tail through ICA of AMERICA. Needless to say, the technical quality and aesthetic appeal of this GEM AU piece is exceptional! PCGS 122, NGC 81, CAC 9. For the variety, PCGS has graded just three, with a single coin finer. Back in Goldberg's September 2011 auction, this coin brought $10,925. The current CAC CPG value is listed at $12,300. This is an important opportunity for the advanced early dollar die variety collector that should not, and cannot be taken lightly. Bidding for this special Draped Bust dollar will be intense. Cert.
