Lot Description
1861 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. Proof-64 (PCGS). CAC. This attractive half dollar is lightly toned in iridescent silver-lilac, powder blue and olive-russet. Universally reflective in finish with a razor sharp strike, there is much to recommend this premium quality example to the discerning numismatist. From a mintage of 1,000 Proofs, which proved wildly optimistic on the part of Mint employees given the outbreak of the Civil War that year. With many specimens remaining unsold and later fed into commerce, the Proof 1861 half dollar is far scarcer than the mintage would imply. Provenance: From the Abigail Collection, Part II. CAC Population: 12 in all grades in this category. PCGS# 6415. NGC ID: 27TL. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
