This is an exceptionally well preserved, highly attractive example of a conditionally challenged Carson City Mint Morgan dollar issue. Sharply struck throughout, both sides are toned in rich reddish-rose and russet iridescence that is confined to the peripheries and the protected areas around the central design elements. With a full endowment of billowy mint luster and a silky smooth appearance, this coin is a delight to behold and will please even the most discerning numismatist.<p>Despite a more generous mintage of 1,618,000 pieces, the 1891-CC is scarcer in Mint State than the lower mintage 1880-CC, 1881-CC and 1885-CC Morgan dollars, to say nothing of the 1882-CC, 1883-CC and 1884-CC issues. Even so, the 1891-CC is readily available in grades up to MS-64, although even low end Uncirculated coins are in high demand because of the coveted CC mintmark. Gems in MS-65 are scarce, and those certified any finer are decidedly rare. Among the finest known to PCGS, this gorgeous premium Gem would serve as a highlight in an advanced collection of Morgan dollars or Carson City Mint coinage.<p>Morgan dollar specialists dearly love their varieties and the 1891-CC Spitting Eagle is popular among them. Often in numismatics an interesting nickname will project a coin into greater importance than a die variety notation. That said, the present condition rarity is of further desirability for the interesting variety, which is attributable by the presence of a tiny reverse die chip in the field below the opening in the eagle's beak.
