Lot Description: This exquisite Superb Gem is one of the two finest survivors of the rare and highly desirable Proof 1910 Indian eagle known to PCGS. Satiny in texture and absolutely delightful to behold, the surfaces allow ready appreciation of the so-called "Roman Finish" for which this issue is known. Rich medium gold color dominates both sides, although closer inspection with the aid of direct lighting reveals subtle pale pinkish-rose highlights in the fields. Razor sharp definition and exceptional quality only add to the appeal of this beauty.<p>The 1910 is the second of only two Satin Proof issues in the regular issue Indian eagle series (the handful of Satin Proof 1908 eagles certified are likely trial pieces not intended for public sale). It has a much higher mintage than the 1909 - 167 pieces versus 74 pieces - but is of similar rarity. Clearly the vast majority of examples produced for the Proof 1910 were later melted as unsold. The present upper end Superb Gem is one of perhaps just 50 to 60 coins extant in all grades (per John W. Dannreuther, 2018, although <em>PCGS CoinFacts</em> takes a slightly more liberal approach with 50 to 75 known). Most survivors grade no finer than Proof-64, and in Proof-65 and higher the 1910 is actually the third rarest issue of the type behind the 1913 and 1915. As one of the finest evaluated by both PCGS and CAC, we can think of few better coins to represent the Proof Indian eagle as a type or the 1910 as an issue.
