1864 Three-Dollar Gold Piece. Proof-64 Cameo (NGC). CAC. From an original mintage of just 50 proof Threes from the penultimate year of the Civil War, survivors of which are thought to number just 11-14 coins (per Q. David Bowers and Doug Winter, The United States $3 Gold Pieces: 1854-1889, 2005). Seldom do we offer an example of this rare issue, the present occasion made even more special due to the awe-inspiring eye appeal that this near-Gem possesses. Radiant yellow-gold surfaces appear to "go black" in the fields as the coin turns away from a light. Fully impressed and richly frosted devices are set apart in true cameo fashion. There are few signs of handling, and none that are distracting to the unaided eye. A definite highlight of the 19th century gold offerings in this sale, and a coin that would serve as a centerpiece in the finest cabinet.
