Lot Description
69.0 grains. Glossy deep gray surfaces with lighter silver gray devices on obverse, reverse a bit lighter at right side than left. Smooth and attractive, natural softness of strike at 12 o'clock on obverse and running down the left side of the tree. Softness running vertically down central reverse from 12 o'clock, where the first letter N in ENGLAND is weak, to top of the digit 5 in the date. Some parallel lines in the same area and at the digits 52 of the date remain visible on the planchet from before striking. Good surface quality and no post-striking flaws, very nice for the grade. The breaks at the base of the reverse appear slightly later than both Ford coins, with a larger lump on the letter O in DOM. Well preserved and never abused, a charming example of this scarce variety.
