- Lot Description
- A major condition rarity and tied for FINEST graded at PCGS. The obverse and reverse are both draped in beautiful pastel iridescent toning. Soft cobalt blends with gold, lilac, emerald, olive, and russet-tan. Well struck from an obverse die that has a spidery die crack that loops around the periphery. With a mintage of 968,000, you would not think that it was a major condition rarity, but the vast majority of the issue was distributed in the antebellum New Orleans area where they would circulated for years and with very few contemporary collectors to set examples aside, any Mint State survivor exists by pure happenstance. PCGS 3, NGC 0. There have been two appearances of PCGS MS65s at auction. This one sold in November 2014 for $11,163. Even Gene Gardner, who assembled one of the greatest collections of Seated coinage ever only had a MS64. Opportunity knocks very loudly here! Cert. Number 81994062 PCGS # 5439
